Good Day all. Robert Cairns here. I am the CEO/Chief Creator of Amazing Ideas at StunningDigitalmarketing.com.
Today I want to talk about something that you should really take notice of for your business. This is an issue that has impacted me as business professional time and time again.
Let us talk about a scenario first. You contract xyz company to build your first website. Currently you do not have a domain for your website. You ask them to build your website and register the domain for you not thinking any more about the domain name.
The web developer registers the domain name for you. All is great. The website goes live and the site on your domain name works. Or so you thought.
3 years later you change to a new web development agency. You ask your old web developer for access to the domain name so you can repoint your DNS settings. The old developer says no. Houston we have a problem.
You go back and check your contract. Nothing is mentioned about ownership of the domain name. Not a good situation – contracts should say everything. You really do have a problem.
I have been this route for my clients more than once. On several occasions, the old developer turned the domain name over, several times we placed leverage on the old developer to get that domain name and once we even had to wait for the domain to expire, go past the domain registration waiting period then register the domain name ourselves. What a pain.
In all the contracts we do at StunningDigitalMarketing.com we state the client owns ALL domain names that we register for them. Ethics matters to us.
Our team handles this by registering a domain name for a client in either their current account or a brand new account not the account owned by StunningDigitalMarketing.com
Once the client pays for the project in full we had this domain account over as part of our hand over process. This way the client owns the domain and has 100% control over the domain name. No mess and no fuss.
To us ethics in business matter. This is a way to protect both business and be honorable and give the client what they have paid for.
Remember own your own domain name and make sure that your contract says you do. A contract is only as good as the thought that goes into it to protect both parties.
As always Robert Cairns from StunningDigitalMarketing.com here for you. If I can help you in anyway please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org. Have a great day and bye for now.
