From The Chief Technologists Desk For Substack On The Chief Technologists Desk Security and Protecting Your WordPress Website

What a last few months in the security arena especially in WordPress.

Today I thought I would talk a few things:

  1. What is security built on?
  2. Why AI is making security hard.
  3. Some security best pratices.
  4. Security Issues outside of WordPress.
  5. WordPress Security
  6. How I can help.
  7. Final Thoughts.

What is Security Built On?

The security echo system is hard. Companies like Microsoft Google and WordPress have all kinds of security issues. But we still use them.

Why you might ask? Because we trust them.. We trust these companies to fix their security issues. That is why we use them.

Why do clients use my agency to protect their websites? Trust.

Security is based on trust.

Why AI is Making Security Hard?

AI is making security hard. AI is an amazing tool but hackers are using AI as well. As a result we are seeing more zero day security issues and generally more security vunerabilities.

Some Security Best Practices

  1. Backup regularly
  2. Test your backups before you need them.
  3. Update regularly and often.
  4. Use 2FA whenever possible.
  5. Be aware of phising scams and never click on links that you do not know.

Security Issues Outside of WordPress

I wanted to share with you there are many issues outside of WordPress.

Let us start with Windows. Microsoft patched over 200 security issues in June, Over 600 in July (a record) and over 400 in August. That is 1200 plus in 3 Months.

  1. August Patch Tuesday Notes.
  2. July Patch Tuesday Notes.
  3. June’s Patch Tuesday Notes.

Google’s AI found a Chrome bug that was 13 year old.

733 Chrome VPN Extensions Caugh Routing Traffic Though Proxies.

Zoom even had major security issues that allowes a hacker to take over the computer of a meetings participants.

These are just a few examples to show security is an online issue not just a WordPress issue.

WordPress Security

The reality is a lot has been going on.

I would start with the best practices and apply them to WordPress.

This weekend I will share our protocal in a downloadable pdf (free for newsletter subscribers) on how we mange several hundred WOrdPress sites for security.

I trust WordPress to patch security vunerabilities.

I have chosen plugins that I trust – that is the key.

So I trust WordPress to fix security issues.

I also run a software firewall. This is very important and helps minimize attacks.

Hosting is part of your security solution . Choose a good Webhost.

Keep your sites backed up and have regularly tested backups.

Give yourself a fighting chance.

Final Thoughts

You can no longer manage your WordPress website security as a part time job and run your buisness. You need to hire a pro to manage it for you.

AI is going to make this harder then easier.

Make the right choices to protect yourself.

If you need help – ask.
