Hey everybody. Rob Cairns here. I hope everybody’s having an amazing day.
As you know, I’ve been working on relaunching the STM show and it’s about time, frankly. So our last episode I released was called the sad state of social media. Go check it out on our website, studying digital marketing.com. Please check out that great conversation with Jeff Brown and Scott Mills, two guys who have a lot of insight into what works, what doesn’t work and.
This stage is social media, little hint for you. It’s not all that bad besides that. A little roadmap on where we’re going. [00:01:00] I’m going to start releasing a couple of quick podcasts during the week. And I’m working on lining up some interviews for the weekend, which will come out. The next two interviews I’ve already got scheduled and I’ve already got two legacy evergreen interviews kicking around, which I’m going to share with you over the next couple of weeks.
So let’s clear up the backlog a little bit and get it done. And that’s the key. And today’s little solar talk. I’m going to talk about why you shouldn’t DIY do it yourself for your website. So sit back, relax, grabbed your favorite drink and onto the podcast.
in today’s special episode. I want to talk about why you shouldn’t DIY your website. Many small business owners like to deal why I do it [00:02:00] yourself, their websites. And frankly, I don’t think it’s a good idea. Now I know people are going to say all you’re a marketer. You want business. Um, you’re being selfish, uh, suggesting that we don’t do our website yourself actually.
And I’ll give you an example of that. If I have an accounting issue, I go to an accountant. If I have an issue with plumbing, I go to a plumber. I don’t try and do those things myself, frankly. I’m not that good at them and I don’t do them well. And why shouldn’t I spend time doing things that make me money instead of all this frivolous little stuff.
So. Where most small business owners make a big mistake is they do a couple of things. They jump on GoDaddy, Wix, Squarespace, Weebly, and they design a quick one. Just a couple problems with this. First of all, they’re locked [00:03:00] into those platforms. They actually don’t even own their content. Read the terms of service.
At least if you use something open source, like WordPress, you actually own your, your con. That’s the first thing. Number two, they don’t have the experience to design a proper website that converts a lot of things that people put on websites. For example, big sliders really don’t impact conversions and they don’t set their website to convert.
What’s the point of having a website? If it doesn’t convert to business, that’s fruitful. Number three, what these people don’t know is things, things like what type of font sizes I should use, what color work, what images work and even more. So don’t go and grab images from images.google.com and they don’t seem to pay attention to the [00:04:00] images or copyrighted or not.
And that we’ll get you into problems, especially if you. Use a Getty image without paying for it. Getty images, images have been known the Sue for Watts of hundreds of dollars. And I’ve known several people. This has happened too. So please don’t do it. The next thing they they don’t do is they spend all this time building a website that they’re not good at.
And the reality of it all is. They could have been spending time on the core business, whether that’s selling a product, running a store, running a restaurant, and it’s taking time away from doing that. And it probably took them not always, but often way more than it would have taken somebody experience like myself or other colleagues I’ve got to design and develop your website.
Then they don’t even know how to set up the security on that web. Which is even worse of a problem. I mean, frankly, if your website’s not secure in today’s day and age, especially with the pandemic going on, the hackers are having a field day, so that’s something else they need to think about. And then it goes on.
So before you sit down and say, I’m going to save a few bucks in the short term, designing my website or doing my thing, I would suggest to go out and get somebody experienced. To do it. Now, it will cost you a little bit, but in the long run it will make you money. And he isn’t that the reason you want your own website is to drive conversions that make money, think about that.
So those are some food for thought today, as I think about the whole let’s try and save money by doing it yourself. Uh, space we’re in these days. Think about that, please don’t do it and reach out. And if you’d write to reach out to myself, feel free vip@stunningdigitalmarketing.com. Be glad to help you or any other professional to help you with your website.
Think about it hard and really do the right thing for your business. And I hope that helps. Sort of explain why you shouldn’t do it yourself for your website. I hope that helps and have a great day.
