Episode 46 Shiny Tools in Marketing

Rob Cairns here. I’m the CEO and Chief Curator amazing ideas of stunning digital marketing Comm. Today I want to talk about something small business owners make a big mistake doing. They try to market using the next best shiny thing. That’s stunning digital marketing.com. We have a philosophy, we like to use proven techniques. Yes, sometimes being on the leading edge is a good thing. But most of the time, short term gain for long term pain. I’ve talked about the shiny object syndrome in past episodes of this podcast more than once. Deep balls fuck to what is new. Having been in business for a number of years, I could say it’s a big mistake. Stability matters. Going nowhere your tribe customers potential customers are matters. This not this might not be in line with Chinese next best thing. As someone who does marketing, I’m all for trying new things if my audience is on that platform, and let me explain kind of where this conversation came from. The group I belong to on Facebook to discussion and talk to him. For those of you who don’t know, tik tok is a video service. These days, it seems to be frequented by teens more than anything, they always move to the next shiny tool to avoid detection by their parents. So interestingly enough, they like to tools. As a business, this could be tempting, maybe, personally, I would ask myself two things. One, is my target market on the service to is a service viable in the long run? In this case, my answer is no. And who knows, this would keep me away from tik tok. Now, let’s take the argument Tiktok is from a viable financial company that’s put lots of cash, why can’t give me two services that fell into that. One was Google Buzz. And one was Google Plus alphabet as more money than most companies in the world. And they were both failures. So cash doesn’t matter. Acceptance does, and being able to market to what’s in there does as well. So that’s something to think about. One reason I want to find out if a service is viable, is I don’t like invest time, or the resources into that service. There might be no direct financial cost to remember, there’s always a cost to using every service so the service could be free. But your time is still money, your staff time is still money, time they get the graphics, to produce the graphics, so on and so on the video and so on and so forth. Why not build on the term as long term viability. So in the case of video, YouTube Wistia, Vimeo, live streamed to places like Facebook, or video on Facebook, LinkedIn, live or otherwise, Twitter services like that. So video matters. It’s the delivery mechanism that I’m not so sure matters. So I understand the medium. And I’m an expert in what works and what doesn’t work. I’ve been doing this a long time I, I get to mediums, and frankly, I have a good pulse on what’s working in the market. The first up as we talked about can give you a short term edge. But in the long term, it actually costs you more, you have to invest more time, more money, more expertise and resources, and more in a service and night. That might not be around for a long time. And you spend more and wonder why killing why you’re killing your marketing budget. So the reality is, if you’re first adopt, it’s always gonna cost you more to figure stuff out. It’s gonna force you more to do things, and so on and so forth. If once people have proven strategies, and you can adopt the strategies, and save yourself time in that way, so that’s something else to think about. You know, what my choices how I treat services, think about this and make the right marketing choice for your company. do what’s right for you. See what works for you.
